After an exciting opening week, week two serves as a very important moment for each NFL team as 61 percent of teams make the playoffs after a 2-0 start. On the contrary, if a team starts 0-2, that percentage drops all the way down to 11 percent.
With that being said, Here are some of the most anticipated matchups and best games from the second week of the NFL season:
Vikings Falter Against Eagles
On the season debut of Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video, the Vikings offense couldn’t seem to do anything right through a half of football. Three fumbles and their inability to convert third downs, resulted in them trailing the defending NFC champions, 13-7, at halftime.
Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts, struggled to get anything going through the air, but Philadelphia sent a huge message with a 16-play scoring drive where they ran the ball 13 times. Minnesota began to claw back into the game through the air with touchdown passes to rookie wide receiver, Jordan Addison and veteran K.J. Osborn, making the score 27-21 Eagles with seven minutes left.
However, Philadelphia’s offensive line and run game sealed the game with an eight-play scoring drive, killing three and a half minutes of the game clock and ending with a D’Andre Swift touchdown. This game moved the NFC favorites to 2-0 while putting the Vikings, a team that went 13-4 a year ago, to a disappointing 0-2 start to 2023.
Seahawks Upset in Detroit
Coming off of a shocking win over the defending Super Bowl champs, the Detroit Lions hosted quarterback Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks with a chance to go 2-0 for the first time since 2017.
A back-and-forth contest between two high-powered offenses gave the Seahawks a 31-21 lead with eight minutes to go in the game. Lions quarterback, Jared Goff, led two huge drives to tie the game with a 38-yard field goal by Riley Patterson as time expired.
In overtime, Smith went six of seven through the air ending with a walk-off touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyler Lockett, clinching an upset win for the Seahawks.
Ravens Secure AFC North Win in Cincinnati
A battle between the two preseason favorites in the AFC North took place with high stakes on the line. The beaten-up Baltimore Ravens traveled to Cincinnati, who came off an embarrassing performance against a stifling Cleveland Browns defense.
After touchdowns coming from Baltimore’s Edwards and Bengals’ r Charlie Jones, both teams traded field goals entering halftime with a 13-10 Ravens lead.
Baltimore quarterback, Lamar Jackson, began to take over in the second half with touchdown passes to tight end Mark Andrews and wide receiver Nelson Agholor gave the Ravens a 27-17 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter. After giving up a late score, the Baltimore defense did enough to hang on and win 27-24, giving the Ravens an early AFC North victory.
Chiefs Bounce Back with Win in Jacksonville (An unexpected defensive battle took place between two normally high-powered offenses. The defending Super Bowl champs, the Kansas City Chiefs, traveled to the NFL’s brightest, and youngest team, the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After a low-scoring first half where the Chiefs led, 7-6 off of a Skyy Moore touchdown, the Chiefs got into the endzone early in the third quarter with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce connecting for the first time this season. Kansas City’s defense kept the Jaguars out of the endzone all game, clinching a huge early season win, 17-9.
Washington Starts 2-0 After a Win in Denver
t In one of the most high-scoring games of week two, the Washington Commanders and the Denver Broncos kept things exciting.
Quarterbacks Sam Howell and Russell Wilson went back and forth through the air in the first half. The Commanders began to pull away with a couple of touchdown runs by running back Brian Robinson Jr. giving Washington a 35-24 lead with a little over seven minutes left.
Then, the Broncos picked up some momentum with a field goal and a huge three and out giving the offense the football back with 48 seconds left. Wilson made some huge throws ending with a 50-yard connection to Brandon Johnson giving Denver the chance to send the game into overtime with a two-point conversion.
However, after a controversial no-call in the end zone, a pass from Wilson to Courtland Sutton fell to the grass, ultimately sealing a win for Washington and giving them their best start to a season since 2011.
Browns Left Speechless in Loss Against Pittsburgh
After a very promising season opener where the Cleveland Browns stifled Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland looked to carry that momentum into Pittsburgh.
However, the excitement in Northeast Ohio was quickly put to bed due to a pick-six on the opening play by Alex Highsmith.
Shortly after, star running back Nick Chubb suffered a gruesome knee injury, which served as a devastating loss for Cleveland Brown’s defense once again stepped up, limiting Pittsburgh to very minimal yards offensively, but the Steelers offense finally broke out on a 71-yard touchdown pass from Kenny Pickett to George Pickens.
The Browns would regain the lead on a Pierer Strong Jr. touchdown run, but Cleveland couldn’t get out of their own way. Quarterback Deshaun Watson would be sacked, forcing a fumble that was recovered and returned by Steelers star defensive end T.J. Watt for a game-winning touchdown. The treacherous game gave Pittsburgh an ugly 26-22 victory over their division rival.
