My workout regime has always varied, but I’ve recently added hot yoga classes into my weekly schedule. I wasn’t expecting to experience several changes aside from different movements, but the outcomes I’ve seen have already changed my perspective on exercise.
I’ve broken up my standard routine with a variety of movements. I normally lift weights, walk, go to a spin class or bike outside when the weather warms up. A few weeks ago, though, I had an impromptu basketball practice cancellation, so I chose to go to a hot yoga class with a friend. Now, I own an unlimited class pass for February and I may choose to continue my subscription through March (if personal funds are sufficient).
It’s important to note that I don’t make decisions like these lightly. I’m always one to consider, reflect and ponder any choice I make, whether it’s something as fleeting as an exercise class subscription or a pivotal life decision.
But, just after my initial class within the bounds of the overwhelming heat in the studio, I felt refreshed and almost void of stress from the previous parts of my day. The class type can vary, but I’ve been able to attend Vinyasa flow sessions, along with power-oriented classes. The Vinyasa flow classes are more relaxing with a greater focus on flexibility, stretching and regulated breathing. In contrast, the Power sessions allow for core work, more advanced poses and overall strength.
In comparing the two options, I’m indifferent. Regardless of the movement, I always feel refreshed and empowered after a session. The heat within the room allows everyone to break from the barriers and pressures of the day, something that always resets a person.
But, what I have enjoyed the most is using movement as a form of relaxation and centering, rather than as a high-intensity workout that requires significant recovery. Yoga has already increased my flexibility and has assisted me in shifting my perspective on exercise.
I think that many people use exercise as a form of punishment or a way to change something about yourself. Instead, I think that exercise should be categorized as any activity that involves some sort of movement in a way that makes you feel recharged, energized and content. I’ve been on this journey of determining what makes me feel powerful, but also at peace.
I’m thrilled to have introduced yoga to my regime for several reasons and I imagine that my journey will continue as I navigate the next years of my life.
