University Heights, OH—On Oct. 1, the Student Government brought in John Carroll University Chief of Police Jeffery Daberko in response to the yearly crime report that came out over the weekend.
Before getting into the crime report, Daberko mentioned, “JCUPD is a 24/7 outlet for any students. We had training in active shooter and mental health counseling in August and at the beginning of the semester. This year, we have added other responsibilities like the Benedictine High School football games, off site parking and university apartments.”
With a staff of 15, of which 11 are officers, JCUPD’s resources are spread thin. With the closure of Notre Dame College this spring, the number of parking spots at the offsite location jumped from 245 to 340. At the offsite lot, a contract security officer is assigned to the lot from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., seven days a week. This is in addition to camera coverage of the lot and patrol checks by JCUPD and South Euclid police officers.
Another part of the discussion was regarding adding more parking on campus. Building some lots is an idea, but it would need permission from University Heights. Daberko says, “Our systems are getting much better to report.” Another topic that was brought up was stalking. The term “stalking” has evolved to a more online approach. Typically, if someone reaches out to the police department, a case will be opened, and whoever is the cause, will be told to stop.
When asked about first and second-year student responses, President Morgan Anderson ’25 had this to say, “The Notre Dame lot is off campus but not too far unlike other schools and campuses. Sure, it can be an inconvenience at times, but it is getting better. There was no shuttle a few years ago. If students have concerns, reach out to Student Government.”
Other topics that were mentioned during the meeting were legislation on Spending Authorization (SA01-F24). According to the document, it is a $2,000 expense that goes towards food and other expenses with Unity Night on Oct. 16. The legislation did pass.
The exercise science labs in the Student Center across from the IM Gym will be expected to open in January. The pool and ping pong tables will be getting a few new upgrades including new sticks and an investment in a ping pong ball vending machine. It will cost 25 cents.
Vice President Mike White ’25, wrapped up the meeting by saying, “If anyone has any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out.”
