Rumors of a potential unhoused individual living in Campion Hall circulated among students earlier this week, prompting concern and speculation within the residence hall community. Some Campion and Hamlin Hall residents reported seeing an unfamiliar person in common areas and restrooms, leading to questions about building security and guest policies.
In response, the Office of Residence Life sent a statement to residents of both residence halls clarifying the situation and addressing safety concerns. According to the statement, reports of an unhoused person living in or accessing either residence hall are unfounded.
Residence Life officials explained that the individual in question was a guest of a John Carroll University student, not someone living in the residence halls without authorization. The concerns related to that guest have since been addressed by the John Carroll University Police Department and the Office of Residence Life and are now being managed through the University’s student conduct process.
The statement also served as a reminder of the University’s Guest Policy. Students are responsible for informing their guests of University policies and community expectations and may be held accountable for their guests’ actions. “Guests must be escorted by their hosts at all times while in University-sponsored housing. Guests may not be left unattended in University housing, including, but not limited to, in common spaces and individual rooms,” the statement said.
Residence Life further emphasized that residence halls are locked 24/7 and can only be accessed by residents using their Carroll Cards. Students were reminded not to allow non-residents, including other students, delivery drivers or community members, to enter the building behind them.
Officials encouraged residents to contact their RA, the Office of Residence Life or JCUPD immediately if they are concerned about the behavior of a guest or an individual who is not a resident. The statement concluded by reaffirming that community safety is a shared responsibility and the University’s top priority.
