On Thursday, Oct. 4, many JCU students headed to Kulas to laugh with comedian Dave Coulier, known for his popular role as Uncle Joey on the hit 90’s sitcom, “Full House.”

Coulier came to John Carroll as part of the Student Union Programming Board’s lineup of Homecoming weekend festivities, which they began planning a full year ago, explained Eddie Jenkins, SUPB president. “We actually put our deposit down for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame about last October, and since then, we’ve kind of had some different stuff in the works for it.”

The major planning for the weekend, though, occurred at the end of last spring semester. “That’s when we really started to look at, okay, how many tickets can we sell? We started looking at booking things like buses, and thinking about catering orders, and ordering stuff for the tailgate, because you know, homecoming is more than just the dance, it’s all eight events that happened that weekend,” Jenkins remarked.

One of the eight homecoming celebration events was the comedic stylings of actor and comedian Dave Coulier. Jenkins explained the process of booking the “Full House” actor. “We actually have a middle agent that is in connection with a bunch of different artists and performers. He’s the same agent that we use for our welcome back concert. So we’ll give him our budget and the date that we’re looking at for the event, and he’ll look for artists that fall both within our budget and on that date, but also within our mission.”

“From that, we’ll get a list of people who are all available on that date who are touring, and are all roughly within our budget,” Jenkins said.

The SUPB events coordinator, Paige MacMullan, then went through the list of possibilities and chose which one would best fit the event.

“We try and go for the one that we think is going to attract the most students,” Jenkins shared. “So you know, with Dave, it was an easy option, because we can just say ‘Joey’ from “Full House.”

Jenkins said that the event went well. “It was fantastic. People really seem to be buzzing about it.”

The over 430 students that attended were doing just that. Noah Tylutki ‘21 said, “I really enjoyed the comedian. His jokes were really funny. I especially liked the ones about sports, like about Shaq.”

“I thought that Dave Coulier was humourous,” Samuel Stimson ‘20 said. “It was worthwhile. Seeing him in ‘Full House’ and now seeing him person was pretty cool.”

“By the end I didn’t want him to ‘cut it out,’” Julianne Kovacs ‘20 added.

Jenkins noted that “Anyone that I talked to when I was handing out flyers really enjoyed the idea that Uncle Joey was coming to campus, and that was definitely a neat experience to see.”

Brianna Chlosta ‘20 shared, “I was so excited I thought I was going to bounce off the walls of the student center!”

Marcello Adhikary ‘20 added, “When I heard Dave Coulier was coming to campus, I was like ‘What? Uncle Joey from Full House?’ That is so cool. I was so excited to see my childhood hero live on stage.”

Through the same middle agent they used to book Coulier, SUPB also booked opener Seaton Smith, a comedian who previously appeared on Comedy Central.

Jenkins said that Smith’s routine “was really good, definitely really funny. He had a tough role to fill. Everybody was there for Uncle Joey, and in everybody’s eyes, you just have some random guy out there who they may or may not have heard of. So I think he really brought his A-game and provided an interesting opening that energized people and got everybody ready for Dave.”

Kovacs had a very positive review of the opening act.

“Honestly, I thought he was super good. I had never heard of him before, but he made a really good impression,” she said.

“I would watch him again,” Kovacs said.

The night of comedy, as part of homecoming weekend, was a success in multiple respects, and many JCU students are excited to see what other events SUPB has in store for the year.
