John Carroll University announced Tuesday that Carolyn Noll Sorg has been selected as the institution’s 27th president, marking a significant moment in the university’s leadership transition.
Sorg, who has served as JCU’s vice president for enrollment and marketing, will assume the presidency in 2026. She succeeds outgoing President Alan R. Miciak, Ph.D., who will step down after completing his term for the 2025-2026 academic year. Sorg becomes the first woman in the university’s history to hold the position.
In a press release, Sorg said, “I am honored to be selected as the 27th president of John Carroll University. I am tremendously grateful to the Board of Directors, the search committee and especially to President Al Miciak for his transformative leadership of our University.”
The Board of Directors said Sorg’s appointment follows a national search that began earlier this year. Her background in strategic enrollment, institutional growth and mission-centered leadership was a key factor in the board’s decision.
During her tenure at John Carroll, Sorg led initiatives that strengthened first-year student recruitment, expanded the university’s visibility and modernized its marketing strategies. She previously held leadership roles in student development and admissions at several Cleveland-area institutions.
In an email to the JCU community, the board of directors stated, “Under Carolyn’s leadership, John Carroll realized its largest consecutive increase in first-year enrollment this century. Her work has strengthened every part of the university, from designing key initiatives to expand John Carroll’s national visibility and strengthen student outcomes, as well as securing $7 million in fundraising for our Go National strategy.”
In her new role, Sorg is expected to focus on academic innovation, student success, community partnerships and long-term financial sustainability. More details are soon to come.
