For several years, International Business with Language and Culture (IBLC), a John Carroll student association that merges business skills, languages and intercultural understanding, has hosted notable events that have received strong community support. Through these events, the IBLC association offers participants the opportunity to better understand and prepare for the challenges of a globalized world, in large part due to the diversity brought to John Carroll by its international students.
Walter Simmons, Ph.D, the director of the program, considers IBLC and its events essential. Simmons said, “In today’s interconnected world, proficiency in another language and an understanding of different cultures give students a powerful advantage, equipping them to navigate global challenges and succeed in international business, politics and society.”
For instance, the Classical and Modern Languages and Cultures + IBLC Alumni Networking Event has recently enabled students to meet graduates of the IBLC program and build valuable connections. At International Coffee Hour, (include date here), participants enjoyed a variety of pastries while learning about study opportunities. On Jamaica Day, attendees celebrated Jamaican culture with food, music and games, while International Fest brought together various cultural organizations with delicious dishes and activities, offering a unique chance to discover the multicultural richness of the campus and its students. Furthermore, the Ink and Identity workshop, dedicated to recognizing linguistic diversity, was organized in the fall semester of 2025, allowing students to freely express their creativity while learning and actively participating.
This semester, the association is planning more varied events. On Feb. 27, the association hosted Caribbean Day. A conversation with the former US ambassador William Brownfield happened on March 12, 2026, allowing students that are passionate about geopolitics to explore today’s pressing questions with a leading voice. On a multicultural campus within a developing and constantly evolving world, such an event, open to all, is a valuable opportunity.
The IBLC student association plays a key role in university life, promoting exchanges between international and local students. By facilitating the integration of new generations of JCU students, the association strengthens global ties and helps build an international network of students and future alumni around the world.
IBLC offers unique opportunities for students who wish to get involved in a global community while developing professional and intercultural skills essential for their future.
Participation in the IBLC student association is open to all students, thus strengthening the collaborative and inclusive dynamics of the campus for a promising future.
