Starting in high school and coming to John Carroll University, Brynn Smith knew exactly how she wanted her small business. In high school, Smith had an interest in event planning with a creative side. To balance academics, work and her clubs, Smith found making balloon arches was a hobby that she could find success in as an entrepreneur. She finds the middle ground between academics and her creative side hustle. She has learned how to manage time and prioritize, taking sacrifices when necessary.
“While I’m in college, balloon arches are a good creative outlet that I found myself in,” said Smith.
Smith studied the art of balloon arches, watching YouTube videos and deconstructing professional arches to figure out the mechanics hands-on. Smith’s first balloon gig was for her brother’s graduation party, where she used a kit. Since then, she does the entire process from scratch, which makes the arches more “organic” and flexible to her creative visions.
Smith is an accounting major and an entrepreneurship minor. She knew from the start that she wanted to be a part of the entrepreneurship program. Once at JCU, Smith learned of the LaunchNET program. She worked with Jamey Polak to build up her business before she received her LLC (Limited Liability Corporation).
“It was just really building [my business] up and getting this idea set in stone. I came in with the idea of wanting to do event planning. [Polak] has been the main resource on campus,” said Smith.
“If you ever have an idea, or what to learn more about the Entrepreneurship program, go talk to them, anyone in the department. They’re all amazing. Use the resources we have on campus.”
The name “Crafty Peanut” comes from her dad, who called her a peanut since the day she was born. Smith had known since high school that her future business was going to be called “The Crafty Peanut” and went to the extent of keeping the name secret in order to preserve it. Once she received her LLC, the name became a permanent corporation with her business.
“It’s that good reminder of family making memories. I wanted that to be incorporated into my work,” said Smith.
Smith’s clients range from her hometown of Beloit, Ohio to the community of John Carroll University, making balloon arches for different events and occasions. In the future, Smith hopes to continue her balloon arch business and expand after working in accounting for a few years. Possibly being in the wedding industry would be “unreal” for her.
“Hopefully, I’ll be able to switch my business to full-time, because that’s what I’m really passionate about,” said Smith.
Smith advises possible entrepreneurs to try even if it might not work out.
“Have an open mind. You don’t know how it’s going to work until you try something. Definitely have an idea and run with it. See what people think of it because you never know, you might have a one million dollar idea.”
“Something I wish I would have told myself was to be easier on yourself. You can’t do everything alone. Give yourself grace.”
Alongside her business, Smith works for the University Club multiple times a week and interns in the business office of Rodman for the accounts payable department. She’s also involved with the Entrepreneurship Club and Accounting Association and she is the president of the Women in Business club. These organizations allow Smith to network and give her professional development opportunities.
A common misconception Smith faces is what “balloon art” is defined as, since she is used to the phrase to describe her work. Once, she had someone ask if she sells actual peanuts.
“I hope my story encourages others to go forward with their own businesses. John Carroll is all about starting early, getting involved and setting you up for success,” said Smith.

She is just as mature and dedicated to her business as this article portrays and is also the sweetest person in the world to work with, and also the most professional.
