Blue Streak Media excels with 5 SPJ awards

The Carroll News proudly presents its award-winning paper.

The Carroll News and WJCU were awarded 5 SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards at the SPJ conference in Louisville, Kentucky on April 12, 2026. These awards reflect the success of the work that media students have completed over the past year. Media professionals from across the country review submissions from each category to determine winners and finalists. Despite the competition, JCU students won or were finalists for the following awards:

The Carroll News:

  1. Winner of Best Newspaper (Small size) 
  2. Finalist for General Column – “My experience learning in a women’s prison” by Bella Congelio

WJCU: 

  1. Winner for Feature – “New owners for Jack’s Deli” by Tate Farinacci
  2. Winner for Podcast Narrative – “Cleveland–still a mistake on the lake?” by Gianluca DiGiacomo, Matt Lyons and Manny Torres

Finalist for Sports – “Cleveland Crunch set to host MLIS championship” by Gianluca DiGiacomo

Anna Maxwell is the managing editor for The Carroll News from Ashtabula, Ohio. She is a Junior at John Carroll University who is an Accounting major. Anna has been writing for The Carroll News since the fall of 2023! In addition to writing for The Carroll News, she is also an Honors student here at John Carroll, works at the Writing Center and is a member of the Accounting Association. She is excited to continue writing in the years to come! When not writing, Anna can be found reading a new book, or binge-watching her favorite Netflix shows!
