Thoughts on Travlor: real or PR relationship?

Anna Maxwell shares opinions on whether or not Travlor is real romance or PR.

Every Swiftie has recently been entranced with the new relationship between Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. However, is it all real?

As someone who does not follow Swift, I have not been focused on the new couple, but I recently saw that NFL viewership has been blown out of the water as a result of this possible relationship. This made me begin to question the validity of their newfound love. Could the NFL be promoting the relationship in order to get more views, or is the couple simply a couple of lovebirds?

The NFL stated that their relationship is a “pop culture moment” that they’ve “leaned into in real-time.” To say the least, the NFL is not suffering a loss when Swift attends games and has screen time at these events. They are getting more publicity from a wider audience by knowing that Swift has won the affections of many people who would not typically be watching these games. When Swift attends their games, she is garnering a larger viewership for the NFL, as Swifties wait in anticipation to see “Sparks Fly.”

However, combatting this PR theory are comments made by Kelce himself. Kelce responded to the NFL’s actions, stating that there comes a point when there is too much coverage. He thinks they are “overdoing it a little bit.”

Many fans responded kindly to Kelce’s words about Swift because he directly defended her, their relationship, and their privacy. Fans also have hope that Kelce and Swift somewhat respect the level of publicity they will probably receive as a result of their A-list fame, which they could not say about her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

After reviewing comments made by Kelce, one would think that both of these adults are in a happy, understanding relationship. However, there is still speculation that more could be at play. According to Elaina Magel ‘27, the relationship could go either way.

“It’s her relationship; she’s only going to tell us as much about it as she wants to, so we never know what’s going on,” Magel told The Carroll News. “But they look happy together and his comment about being with her being better than winning the Super Bowl was extremely cute.”

I think the Swifties are hoping for a happy ending, but they will have to see if the couple will make it to the big leagues, or if the acronym NFL will stand for Not For Long if Kelce and Swift do not last. But if the relationship is simply a PR stunt, it is most definitely working. Many Swifties are watching the games in support, whether the relationship is real or not. Since there is so much debate about the validity of the relationship, the NFL, Kelce and Swift are all covering the headlines when there is a new development in their relationship.

Overall, the relationship – real or not – is gaining national attention from fans of both Kelce and Swift alike. Although relationships in the media are compelling and exciting, we cannot forget that celebrities are people too. Even with this debate, Kelce and Swift have the right to privacy. Fans can still remain in the loop by staying on the sidelines and allowing the relationship to develop on its own timeline. We will soon see whether or not these “New Romantics” will be thinking they “Should’ve Said No” or if they’ll be “Forever & Always.”
