On Aug. 23, Sabrina Carpenter, a former Disney actress and popular pop artist, released her highly anticipated album “Short n’ Sweet” which has many people instantly obsessed. Many songs on the album are theorized to be about her short romance with singer Shawn Mendes and his on-and-off relationship with Camila Cabello, especially following the music video for the album’s opening song, “Taste,” starring both Carpenter and Jenna Ortega.
Personally, I have been listening to the album on repeat since its release, and although some fans believe it is an album with no skips, I would have to disagree. Below are my top five songs from the album:
1. “Lie to Girls”
This song describes the familiar feeling of women putting on rose-colored glasses when they fall in love. Carpenter sings about the unfortunate fact that when loving someone, men don’t have to “Lie to Girls” because they will lie to themselves to make it work. The theme is very relatable, and the simplicity of the music is calming. I am a sucker for a good melancholy song.
2. “Coincidence”
Carpenter’s song is fun and upbeat while having a sarcastic undertone. “Coincidence” describes the feeling of dealing with a person who is in love with her partner and how each calculated incident must be simply coincidental. Carpenter’s voice is perfect for the nature of this song and complements the lighthearted beat with her sharp intonation.
3. “Good Graces”
“Good Graces” advises men in Carpenter’s life to be careful about how they act, because she is “amazing at turning loving into hatred.” This song is for the listeners who love to blast music in their car or dance around in their rooms while singing about being fierce.
4. “Juno”
“Short n’ Sweet” is an album that does not hold back, and both “Juno” and “Bed Chem” are at the top of that category. Many listeners assume this song references Carpenter’s relationship with actor Barry Keoghan who was featured in her “Please Please Please” music video earlier this year. “Juno” is a very catchy song that makes me want to roll the windows down and turn the volume up.
5. “Taste”
This song was popularized by her recent music video with Jenna Ortega which has over 47 million views on YouTube. “Taste” describes the jealousy of seeing an ex-partner in a new relationship soon after a breakup. Since it is the first song on the album, it is a great jump start for the rest of the album and prepares the listener for an exciting and dangerously addicting adventure.
I did not mention her two hits from the album, “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” because they already get quite a bit of attention on TikTok and other social media platforms; they are overplayed.
Overall, the album was unexpectedly addicting and I have been playing it any chance I get, even while walking around campus. Carpenter really went all out with this new release and can most likely expect quite a big turnout at her tour with the same title.
