After beating the Charlotte Hornets on Nov. 17 , the Cleveland Cavaliers are off to the best start in franchise history. Their new style of offense has been a big reason for their 15-0 record.
One of the biggest turning points for the Cavs this season has been three point shooting. Being able to knock down threes at such a high rate has taken the offense to another level. They lead the league in three point percentage with 42 percent. They’re also number one in scoring with 124 points per game.
Multiple players like Donavan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Caris Levert have improved their three point percentages from last season. Darius Garland is shooting 46.5 percent from behind the arc, a nine percent increase from last year. Levert increased his by thirteen percent.
That is a testament to the shot quality of the Cavaliers’ shots this season. A few ways they have been able to increase the quality of their looks is by getting everyone involved, and playing with pace. They’re currently top six in assists averaging 28.4 per game. Being able to get out and run while keeping the ball moving has helped keep everyone in rhythm so that they can capitalize off of the open looks.
Someone who specifically has been able to benefit from this is Darius Garland. His raise in efficiency has been huge for the Cavaliers: he’s averaging 21 points with 53-46-92 shooting splits. Garland came into the season healthy with a more decisive approach that has helped him close out games in clutch. It’s also allowed him to stay consistent with his high level of play.
When thinking about backcourt play, the impact of Ty Jerome cannot be overlooked. Jerome has been a positive addition for Cleveland’s bench. He’s averaging ten points while only shooting seven shots per game. His floor IQ and ability to make key plays down the stretch in games has made him a spark plug for the team. His best game so far came against the Hornets, he had 24 points and 8 assists.
Having another key ball handler and shot maker to bring off the bench will come very useful in the playoffs. Jerome’s ability to play both guard positions can also bring some versatility when it comes to lineups.
Cavaliers are missing a starter from last year in Max Strus, while learning a new system under head coach Kenny Atkinson. It makes you think about just how significant this start is and what is to come from this young team.
