Student Government President Morgan Anderson ’25 and Vice President Mike White ’25 sat down with The Carroll News to discuss Student Government’s role at John Carroll. Each senate meeting starts with the preamble, read out loud by each member, which “ talks about how we improve the student welfare and how are we helping,” said Anderson.
Guest speakers appear at almost every Student Government meeting. Some of the more recent speakers include Matt Clark, director of recreation, and Melissa Cole, dean of the College of Health. The goal is to inform and educate students about what is happening throughout the university.
After hearing from the guest speaker, the senate moves into an open forum, where attendees can voice their concerns. White stated, “We encourage students to go and participate in the open forum. Having new voices lets us know what to advocate for.”
When this closes, the reports from students at large who work in different departments, such as elections, business affairs and much more are shared. The reports can range from updates regarding questions and concerns from the open forum to feedback on certain events that happened throughout the community; it also informs senators about upcoming events.
To get involved in Student Government, there are a few actions a student can take. The first is to attend the open forum and another is to run for a senate position. The “intent to run” form went out on Nov. 4 and closed on Nov. 12. The election results will be coming out in the week of Nov. 18. White advised, “Don’t be afraid to run. You can learn from the opportunity. There is a ton of leadership experience that can be a tool in your toolbelt.”
Each senate meeting begins at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Jardine Room located in the Lombardo Student Center.
