On Nov. 7, the theme for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Met Gala was announced as “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” This theme is centered around the development of fashion over time. Fashion enthusiasts are reminiscing about previous Met Gala looks. According to the online publication of Allure Magazine, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton discussed the theme with The New York Times, describing fashion and time as completely linked.

“[Fashion] not only reflects and represents the spirit of the times, but it also changes and develops with the times,” he said.

Bolton added that the theme was based on Virginia Woolf’s works and theories of the famous 20th-century French philosopher Henri Bergson. At the gala, historic clocks will count time and signify fashion’s relationship with it. Additionally, experts on Woolf’s work will be displayed on the walls. The co-chairs of the Met Gala were announced also. They will be actresses Meryl Streep and Emma Stone, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and Louis Vuitton’s creative director Nicholas Ghesquière.

Freshman Lily Economus said, “I thought the theme was very cool this year. It was amazing to see everyone embrace it and go all out. I would love to see a theme similar to ‘The Great Gatsby’ because I love the outfits from that movie.”

Last year the Met Gala was hosted by artists Lady Gaga and Harry Styles, Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele and tennis player Serena Williams. The theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Harper’s Bazaar reported, “The exhibit was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay that defines camp as ‘love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.’”

The camp looks ranged from hilarious to over the top. Rihanna, who is best known for her outstanding looks, was absent from the event last year. Fans are hopeful that she will attend this coming year.

Some celebrities that rocked the theme last year included on-and-off-screen couple Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse, actresses Lana Condor and Zendaya, and couple Priyanka Chopkra and Nick Jonas. On Instagram, Ferragamo shared posts of the couple Reinhart and Sprouse at last year’s Met Gala. One post describing Reinhart’s aqua blue silk dress that Ferragamo designed. Another post described Sprouse’s tailored oxblood sleeveless suit with embroidered flowers, also designed by Ferragamo.

There are high hopes and expectations for the looks and celebrities that will be featured, as the 2020 Met Gala approaches. Will those who flopped last year do better this time? Will others disappoint with the theme? There are only six more months until all of our questions will be answered.
