Another decade is about to end, but there is one thing that is not getting left behind: trench coats. These long button coats are a staple and come in many colors. Trench coats can also be worn almost all year long. Your favorite celebrities, actors, actresses, singers and TV characters are often seen wearing them, showing just how popular these trendy, year-defying coats can be.

The iconic coats have had a place in popular culture for decades.  In the late 1950s, heartthrob actor James Dean often rocked the long coat trend. In 2015, singer Taylor Swift rocked them with her street style. She dressed them up and wore dresses and heels. “Riverdale” on-and-off screen couple Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart were dressed in trench coats for the July 2019 W Magazine. They dressed them up as well: Sprouse wore dress pants and Reinhart wore a dress and heels. Reinhart’s character, Betty Cooper, almost always incorporates a trench coat into her outfit.

British-American journalist Anna Wintour and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle are most known for wearing trench coats. Former First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughters, Malia and Sasha, wore them. Additionally, First Lady Melania Trump can be seen sporting a trench coat; she even included this particular piece in her own clothing line.

Trench coats are classic and can change an entire look. Sophomore Emily Day said, “I think trench coats are super cute and such a timeless piece that looks good with any outfit!” 

People style them with jeans, tennis shoes and booties for a more casual look. If you want to look more formal or business casual, wear a dress or dress pants with flats or heels. Trench coats are even flaunted at the airport. It is very common to see women wearing the coats and accessorizing them with handbags.

The lighter trench coats are designed for spring and the heavier ones are for fall and winter. Is it a cloudy, rainy day? You can never go wrong pairing your trench coat with an umbrella while walking down the street.
