The Ultimate Guide to Being Single on Valentine’s Day

Patrick Kane, Staff Reporter

We all know Valentine’s Day is dedicated to that special someone in your life. But perhaps that special someone hasn’t exactly entered the picture yet. They might not be there anytime soon, given that you do nothing but eat your feelings and spend all night reading amazing Diversions memes The Carroll News has to offer. Being single sucks, but fret not! There are many fun things for singles to do for Valentine’s Day. So, put away your chocolates, wipe away those tears, temporarily ignore the dreading existential loneliness and prepare to celebrate Feb. 14 your way!

Treat Yo Self

Based on the immortal words of Donna and Tom from “Parks & Recreation”, this concept is pretty self-explanatory. Do you want to try that new chicken sandwich in the Inn Between? Treat yo self. Want to buy a ton of junk on Amazon you don’t need? Treat yo self. Want to stay in bed and not deal with the world today? Treat. Yo. Self.

Self-Care

Although this goes alongside treating yo self, this is more about taking care of yo self. Take a nap. Apply that fancy new face mask. Pop in the AirPods and bust out some guilty pleasure tunes (Personal go-to is “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey). Do some exercise in Lombardo. Meditate. Do whatever keeps you in a healthy physical, mental and emotional state.

Know Your Worth

This is probably the most important thing to remember. Too many people conflate their self-worth with how attractive they are as a romantic partner. Do not do this. You are worth more than you can even imagine, single or not. You are a strong, independent person, and you don’t need anyone to tell you that.

Do What Makes You Happy

This is basically the end goal of the first two. You don’t need a significant other to be happy. Sure, it would be nice, but it’s ultimately not required. Whatever it is that God put on this Earth that sparks joy in your heart. Then go out and do it, within reason, of course.

Project Yourself Onto Rom-Com Characters

Sometimes you just don’t want to deal with the world, and you just want to be an adorkable leading lady smitten by Hugh Grant or Noah Centineo. Personal recommendations are Elle Woods from “Legally Blonde” and Lara Jean from “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.”

How a single person spends their Valentine’s Day is up to them. Rather than spend it wallowing in nihilistic misery and loneliness, get out and show the world you can fully function on your own. Remember, be happy.
